A Bit About Us

Kate and Dominic met at Goddard College (RIP), a low-residency school that attracted non-traditional students. A few years later, they reconnected, bonding over a shared childhood love of Susan Cooper novels and a passion for writing and art, and have been together ever since (nearly 12 years now).

Dominic (he/him) spent nearly two decades working as a sommelier, culinary educator, and hospitality management consultant before shifting his attention to creative writing. At Goddard, he studied sustainability, organizational systems, and writing, and he holds MFAs in Nonfiction and Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. His memoir, Faculty Brat, won the 2019 Iowa Prize for Literary Nonfiction, and his picture book manuscript, Hurry, Scurry, Hermit Crab!, won the Candlewick Award from VCFA.

Kate (they/she) worked a variety of jobs—including coffee slinger, bread baker, paralegal, executive assistant, pastry chef, middle and high school teacher—while maintaining a freelance writing and editing career and creative practice. They hold a dual-genre MFA in fiction and poetry from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a PhD in Educational Studies, with a focus on inclusive education and arts-based research, from University of Prince Edward Island. While completing the MFA, Kate served as the Vermont Book Award Fellow, helping to coordinate the annual prize, and as a manuscript evaluator for a New York-based literary agent.

We are passionate about the transformative power of literature, the importance of representation in books, and encouraging a love of reading in people of all ages.

What’s the deal with the name?

Bucca dell’Acqua translates to “mouth of the water” in Sicilian dialect. Dominic’s grandfather’s last name was Bucca, and Dominic has Sicilian heritage from both parents. Since we’re located on Water Street, with a beautiful view of the bay, it seemed like a fun choice for a name.

How do you pronounce Bucca?

Kate used to tell their students, “I’m an English teacher because I love a good BOOK-ah!”
